Spoor Named Assistant Superintendent
Posted on 06/20/2017
Jodi SpoorDr. Jodi Spoor, principal at Boerne-Samuel V. Champion High School since 2012, has been named Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. Spoor succeeds Sandra Radtke, who retired earlier this month.

Spoor's appointment was approved by the Boerne ISD Board of Trustees at its June 19 regularly scheduled meeting.

Spoor's involvement with Boerne ISD dates back to 2008, when she helped open the new Champion High School campus, serving as academic dean and assistant principal. She has been involved from that point forward not only in leading the Champion campus but in district-wide committee work that has impacted student learning at all levels.

Spoor has devoted her professional life to public education. She was a teacher and administrator in Northside ISD and Harlandale ISD before moving to Boerne. She holds her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Texas-San Antonio. She also holds advanced degrees from Trinity University and Texas Tech University. Her undergraduate degree in Spanish and Latin American Area Studies was earned at Texas Tech.

The district will begin an immediate search to identify the next principal for Champion High School.

The board also named Chris Rice as the district's Director of Human Resources. Rice's name is familiar to some Boerne ISD; he served as academic dean and assistant principal at Boerne High School, 2006-2012. He moves into this new role after serving in the Human Resources Department at Northside ISD since 2012.

Board Adopts Budget

In other action, the Board adopted a general operating budget of $75.2 million for 2017-18. This represents an increase of just over 7 percent from last year's operating budget.

The new budget includes a 2 percent pay increase for district employees and funding for 26 new positions across the district. While these new positions in many cases are a response to enrollment growth, there is also a concerted effort on the part of the district to reinstate some positions that were lost in the wake of sweeping cuts to education by the State of Texas in 2011.

The budget also provides funds to hire a new principal mid-year to begin the process of opening the new Van Raub Elementary School. The district's newest campus will open fall 2018.

Superintendent's Final Report

Retiring superintendent David Stelmazewski was commended by the board for his service in Boerne ISD and for 44 years in public education. He retires June 30; Dr. Thomas Price assumes the role of superintendent on July 1.

In his final report to the board, Stelmazewski commended all campuses for a combined attendance rate of 96.2 percent over the course of the 2016-17 school year. The purposeful attention to attendance, he noted, has a positive impact learning and budgeting. He also commended everyone who had a hand assuring successful commencement ceremonies for Boerne High School and Champion High School earlier this month at BISD Stadium.
