Mentoring

"I know with absolute confidence, we are doing something right by kids with our mentor program, whether it's guidance, positive influence with academics-behavior-character or just love and care they display in the kind words and gestures, there is no doubt our mentors are making a difference." – Tommy Hungate, Boerne ISD Principal

Thank you for your interest in the Boerne ISD (BISD) Mentor Program (Program). The BISD recognizes the value and unmatched support from volunteers. It is a privilege to work with the community on behalf of students.

MISSION/GOAL
The mission of the Program is to build character in students by facilitating an ongoing relationship with a caring adult who provides support, guidance, and assistance on a one-to-one basis who is a friend, role model, and advocate.

The goal is to build and nurture a relationship that is based upon trust, support, and encouragement.

WHAT IS A MENTOR
A mentor is a trusted, positive, and caring adult role model committed to spending time nurturing a relationship with a student.

Exposure to and involvement in a caring and positive relationship provides skills and tools necessary to motivate and prepare students for graduation and beyond. Through mentoring, students and adults are more connected to each other, school, and community; hence building a stronger and healthier world!

Volunteer mentors are parents, teachers, business leaders and professionals, law enforcement officers, retirees, artists, musicians, friends, and your neighbors.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD MENTOR
A mentor is someone who is willing and able to share time, talent, treasure, and heart - someone who listens.

COMMITMENT
Volunteers pledge to meet with a student one-to-one weekly for up to one hour for one school year.

HOW TO BECOME A MENTOR
Upon application, background check approval, and character reference inquiry, applicants are invited to a one-hour training session, then carefully matched with a student based upon shared interests, location, and schedules.

Activities emphasizing intentional conversation, having fun, and age appropriate games are provided at each campus. Program Staff provide volunteers with ongoing support and guidance for a successful experience.

If you would like to learn more or to become a mentor, please contact Elizabeth Anna Nolen, Parent and Community Involvement Coordinator, at 830.357.2055.
