First grade dual language students at Curington Elementary School have been selected to take part in the Thomás Rivera Book Award ceremony at Texas State University on Wednesday, November 1.

Dual language classes taught by Irasema Arizpe and Ana Turner will be on the San Marcos campus to present a readers theater performance based on the children’s book Maybe Something Beautiful by Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell.  The book is the 2017 Thomás Rivera Book Award winner in the young readers category.

The Curington first graders will present a short original play based on the book and performed in both English and Spanish.

“This will be a very special day for our students,” said principal Tanya Tate.  “I’m so proud of the students and their teachers.  This is a real honor for our school and for our dual language program.”

Maybe Something Beautiful: How Art Transformed a Neighborhood tells the story of the triumph of a community against the darker forces of social decay.  Based on the true story of the Urban Art Trail in San Diego, California, Maybe Something Beautiful reveals how art can inspire transformation—and how even the smallest artists can accomplish something big.  Authors Campoy and Howell were joined by illustrator Rafael Lopez on this project.

Texas State University College of Education developed the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award to honor authors and illustrators who create literature that depicts the Mexican American experience. The award was established in 1995 and was named in honor of Dr. Tomás Rivera, a distinguished alumnus of Texas State and an educator who served as chancellor of University of California-Riverside.

The Boerne ISD Dual Language Program employs a Dual Language Immersion/Two-Way bi-literacy program model. The program goal is to help students become bilingual and bi-literate in English and Spanish by integrating fairly equal numbers of native Spanish speaking children with native English speaking children for instruction.
