15 PERCENT GRADE REQUIREMENT DEFERRED <> GRADUATION CREDITS REDUCED FROM 26.5 TO 26.0

During the February 27 Board meeting, Trustees approved the recommendation of Superintendent David Stelmazewski to defer the implementation of the statutory provision that requires performance on an end-of-course assessment to count as 15 percent of a student’s final course grade. The deferral applies only to the 15 percent grading requirement in Chapter 39 of the Texas Education Code and will affect only the 2011-2012 school year.

The law still requires students who are first entering the ninth grade in the 2011-2012 school year to achieve a cumulative score on the end-of-course assessments to complete their graduation requirements.

In other action, the Board also approved Superintendent Stelmazewski’s recommendation to eliminate the College Entrance Exam Prep course (formerly known as “SAT/ACT”) as a local graduation requirement. Beginning in August 2012, students will be required to complete 26 credits on the Recommended High School Plan (RHSP) and Distinguished Achievement Plan (DAP). The semester class will be offered as an elective course at both high schools.

BISD hires new BHS football coach

The Boerne ISD School board unanimously approved the hiring of Mike Dormady as the BHS’s new football coach at Monday night’s meeting. Dormady comes to Boerne from Coppell where he was the offensive coordinator at a football program that went four rounds and three rounds deep into the playoffs in two of the past three years. Dormady was also a head coach from 2002-2006 at 4A Poplar Bluff, in Missouri, where they finished 2nd 2 of the 4 years. Dormady said he’s excited about the opportunity to come to Boerne High and will be taking over for former BHS head coach Dane Johnson.
